How to Overcome Dental Anxiety

Posted on 3/21/2022 by DeLuca, Ressel, & Congemi Dental Care
How to Overcome Dental AnxietyDo you find yourself stalling your dentist's appointment until it is absolutely unavoidable? You may be suffering from dental anxiety, and that is completely okay. We all have our own set of fears to fight, and you may be surprised by how common dental anxiety actually is.

However, it does not have to be permanent, for if left untreated and unconquered, dental anxiety can become the root cause for deteriorating oral health. Here we list dental anxiety symptoms, its potential triggers, and tips to help you overcome your fear.

What is Dental Anxiety?

Simply put, dental anxiety is the nagging fear that something is going to go wrong during your dental appointment. Sometimes it is part and parcel of general anxiety. However, it is often a result of past bad experiences at the dentist or fear of dental tools and dentists as instilled by parents to discipline children at a young age.

Overcoming Dental Anxiety

The first step to overcoming dental anxiety is to identify triggers. Make sure you go through the list of common triggers and pay extra attention at your next appointment to identify which one seems to trigger your anxiety.

•  Dental tools and instruments
•  Drilling sound
•  Vibration sensation in the mouth
•  Smell of certain chemicals and dental cleaners
•  Sight of needles
•  Fear of sharp objects
•  Lack of trust with the dentist
•  Fear of blood

Communication is the Solution

Dentists deal with multiple patients with dental anxiety, so they know how to make patients comfortable and keep them calm. However, they may not be able to do that if they are unaware of the fact that you have dental anxiety. Make sure to communicate with your dentist about your condition, discuss potential triggers, and outline a possible solution to handle the situation as best as possible.

Patients with dental anxiety should always plan their appointments. In fact, request that your dentist give you a little extra time as it can make a world of difference. Do not visit the dentist on busy days as crowds, and the fear that the dentist is in a hurry can also trigger dental anxiety.
