How Long Does Gum Cleaning Take?

Posted on 4/25/2022 by DeLuca, Ressel, & Congemi Dental Care
How Long Does Gum Cleaning Take?Dentists usually perform deep cleaning services during appointments. This is due to the necessary planning and the time required to undertake the procedure. Although not a time-intensive procedure, deep cleaning requires prior planning. It involves both canal planning and plaque removal. During the process, your dentist will remove tartar, and plaque from under the gum, allowing your gums to thrive again.

How Long is Each Deep Cleaning Session

Each deep cleaning session usually lasts between 1 and 2 hours but some sessions may take up to three hours. In most cases, the procedure should be done over two appointments. However, if you talk to your dentist, you may be able to squeeze the sessions into two. Most dentists will perform the procedure over three sessions. When booking deep cleaning sessions, you must consider your availability and the ability to come back for the second session.

Is Deep Cleaning Painful

Deep cleaning can be quite uncomfortable for most people. The whole idea of cleaning beneath the gum itself can be disturbing. This is the reason why you must ask about the possibilities of pain. The good news is that pain is something you do not have to worry about. During the procedure, the dentist will administer local or topical anesthesia. The numbing agent makes the whole process painless.

With that said, you will still feel some discomfort and pain once the numbing effect fades away. You should therefore be prepared to feel some soreness in your gums after deep cleaning. In some situations, you might be asked to avoid certain foods after the process. This is normal and should not be a cause for alarm. Make sure you follow your dentist's instructions to avoid aggravating the situation. Only do according to the instructions provided and you will be just fine.
