What Are Permanent Dentures?

Posted on 7/10/2023 by DeLuca, Ressel, & Congemi Dental Care
What Are Permanent Dentures?Dentures are medical devices that replace missing or damaged teeth. They can either be permanent or removable. Dentists make dentures from acrylic, nylon, or metal. They place them over the gum so that they can fit perfectly into position. You can get a complete set of dentures that covers either the upper or lower jaw. However, you can also get partial dentures that only cover one or a few missing teeth.

Dentures help to improve the quality of life. They help with chewing and even talking. When you have a gap in your mouth, the teeth around that gap will move into the space thus, causing the teeth to be misaligned. Dentures will help to stop the teeth from shifting into this space. Additionally, they also help to improve appearance.

Permanent Dentures

Unlike removable dentures, we cannot take permanent dentures on and off. Dental implants will ensure that permanent dentures remain stable when chewing or talking. The dental implants are inserted surgically to help with the stability of the dentures. Dentists make permanent dentures to look and feel like normal teeth.

Benefits of Permanent Dentures

One of the major benefits of permanent dentures is that they are stable. Unlike removable dentures, permanent dentures are not at risk of falling out when chewing or talking. This also means that they also allow you to eat all the foods you want without the fear of them falling out.

Permanent dentures help to stop bone loss. If the dentist installs the dentures correctly, then you will not experience any bone loss. Bone loss usually occurs when you have missing teeth. Permanent dentures will help to stimulate the bones to ensure that there is no bone loss.

Disadvantages of Permanent Dentures

The biggest disadvantage of permanent dentures is that you will have to get a surgical procedure for the installation of the dentures. As stated before, dental implants are inserted surgically to hold dentures in the mouth. Dental implant surgery is an easy surgery, but it is still prone to complications.
When compared to removable dentures, permanent dentures cost more. The cost of treatment plays a key role when deciding to get the treatment. Although permanent dentures may seem expensive, in the long run, it is one of the most cost-effective methods of replacing missing teeth.
If you are thinking about replacing a missing tooth, it is best to consult with your dentist. This is because they are many options for replacing missing teeth and each method has its own advantages and disadvantages.
