Why Two-Dimensional X-Rays Fall Short


Standard dental radiographs have been a diagnostic staple for decades, and they remain useful for many routine checks. However, because a 2D X-ray compresses a three-dimensional structure into a flat image, overlapping anatomy can obscure important details. A small fracture, an area of bone loss on the lingual side of a tooth, or an impacted structure positioned behind another tooth may simply not appear, or may appear distorted in a way that makes accurate diagnosis difficult.

This limitation matters most when a problem is still small. Early-stage bone loss from periodontal disease, a developing cyst, or a hairline root fracture are exactly the kinds of findings that benefit from early intervention, yet they are also the findings most likely to be missed on a flat image.

What 3D Imaging Reveals


Cone beam computed tomography, often called CBCT, captures hundreds of cross-sectional images in a single low-radiation scan and reconstructs them into a detailed three-dimensional model. Our team can rotate this model, slice through it at any angle, and examine structures individually rather than relying on one fixed view.

This level of detail allows us to identify conditions that are difficult or impossible to see with conventional imaging, including:
•  Bone loss patterns around teeth that indicate early or advancing periodontal disease
•  Cysts, lesions, or other abnormalities developing within the jawbone
•  Root fractures or resorption that may not be visible on a flat radiograph
•  Impacted teeth and their exact position relative to nerves, sinuses, and adjacent roots
•  Variations in root canal anatomy, including extra canals or unusual curvatures
•  Airway dimensions that may relate to breathing or sleep concerns

Because the scan produces a true volumetric image rather than a single projection, our team can measure distances, angles, and bone density with a level of accuracy that supports more confident diagnosis and more precise treatment planning.

This same approach applies to monitoring healing after a procedure, watching a cyst or lesion that is not yet large enough to require intervention, or evaluating how bone responds following an extraction.

This kind of longitudinal comparison is difficult to achieve with flat, two-dimensional X-rays, since slight differences in head position or angulation between visits can make older and newer images hard to compare accurately. A volumetric scan removes much of that variability, giving our team a more reliable reference point year after year.

A Fast, Comfortable Scan


Despite the depth of information it provides, a CBCT scan is quick and comfortable. Most scans take less than a minute to complete, and you remain seated or standing in a single position while the scanner rotates around your head. There is no need for the bite-down sensors or repositioning sometimes required with traditional X-rays, and the radiation exposure associated with a dental cone beam scan is significantly lower than that of a hospital CT scan.

Once the scan is complete, the resulting images are available for review almost immediately. Our team can walk through the findings with you during the same visit, explain what we are seeing, and discuss next steps if any further care is recommended.

Not every visit requires a 3D scan.
