What are Veneers?
Veneers can greatly improve a patient’s smile by attaching a thin shell to the visible surface of a patient’s tooth. Made from a resin or porcelain, they are long lasting and durable. When properly secured to the face of the tooth, veneers permanently bond. Veneers can correct broken, discolored, overly small, or cracked teeth.
Although veneers can correct a single tooth, they can also fix a series of teeth by using the same process. Though veneers can be placed on any teeth, most patients have them placed on the most visible teeth.
What are the Benefits of Veneers?
Veneer treatment offers numerous benefits to patients. The placement procedure is both painless and quick. Porcelain veneers resist stains better than other materials and give a natural appearance. By selecting the appropriate shade, our office can even lighten teeth that appear darker. Veneers also require far less manipulation than crowns.
Placing a Veneer
At the first appointment a dental exam is performed and a mold is created of the patient’s teeth. Using a three-dimensional representation of the patient’s teeth, a temporary set of veneers is created. During the second appointment these are placed on the appropriate teeth. A third appointment will be scheduled where the temporary set is removed and our staff will carefully look at the shape, color, and fit to give the patient the best possible outcome for their veneer placement and their improved smile.
An important step in veneer placement is preparing the site to receive treatment. Part of this preparation is a professional cleaning to remove all bacteria and plaque, along with any tartar buildup. This is a vital step to ensure no infection can set in once the veneers are permanently placed which would complicate things.
The next step involves actually bonding the veneer to the face of the teeth using a special bonding agent. An ultraviolet light is then used by our staff to harden the veneers so the material remains permanently fixed to the teeth and will not fall off.
Proper care is necessary to help the veneers last as long as possible. Once they are placed, our staff encourages patients to both brush and floss twice twice a day. Despite veneers being resistant to staining, it is recommended that patients avoid stain-causing beverages such as coffee, tea, and red wine. There are a lot of reasons patients want to get veneers. They may want to hide a chipped or broken tooth, or maybe their teeth are discolored. Some may even want their teeth more evenly spaced, or have overly small or large teeth normalized to appear symmetrical with the remaining natural teeth.
